Twenty years ago when we began our journey through the agency world, the concept of a non-exec director was a little different to now.
I have memories of stern looking clients in grey suits strutting into the office to parade their experience and proffer advice on all things business onto our unsuspecting leaders (who would have done anything to get their client into a room and engaging with their business).
These days it's a little different...
The role of the NED (not the Scottish version) is much more about bringing in and retaining amazingly experienced and valuable leaders who can add real depth to your business, not just a leg up with a new client, or an old one for that matter. We talk a lot about experience and success as being the key to a successful experience with a NED but if truth be told its the failure and mistakes that add just as much value.
Having been there, seen it and done it is so vital when it comes to working with a new advisor. Real experiences, tangible successes and how we react to failure are the key ingredients that making it work.
Academic knowledge around business and finance is important too but you just cant beat the war wounds and badges of honour that real life experience bring. S
o go and find a NED that has just that and watch how they can add real value to you and your business.
